Alternatives to Ahrefs and Semrush for AI Visibility and SEO

Ahrefs and Semrush both track AI visibility now, but the AI part is a small slice of plans priced for full SEO teams. Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month.

Ahrefs and Semrush both track AI visibility now, but the AI part is a small slice of plans priced for full SEO teams. Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month and includes 5 tracked AI prompts. Semrush's SEO + AI Search Starter costs $199 and includes 50.

For many businesses, a cheaper setup is to split the job: free first-party data for SEO, plus a dedicated AI visibility tracker. Prices below were checked on each vendor's pricing page on October 4, 2026.

What the suites charge for AI visibility

Plan Price per month Tracked AI prompts
Ahrefs Lite $129 5 (150 checks/mo)
Ahrefs Standard $249 10
Ahrefs Brand Radar AI (standalone) from $199 Ahrefs prompt database plus your own prompts
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit $99 per domain, billed annually 25
Semrush SEO + AI Search Starter $199 50, tracked daily
Semrush Pro+ $299 100, tracked daily

The suites earn their price through backlink indexes, keyword databases and site audits.

If you need those every week, they are hard to replace. If you mostly need to know how your own site performs and whether AI assistants mention you, you are paying for a lot you won't open.

The SEO half: what free tools already cover

  • Google Search Console: queries, clicks, impressions and positions for your own site. Since June 2026, Google has been rolling out generative AI performance reports that show impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: the same basics for Bing, plus an AI Performance report with Copilot citations and grounding queries.
  • Google Analytics 4: sessions and conversions, including visits referred by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
  • Ahrefs Free: limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data for a site you have verified.
  • Semrush Free: 10 reports per day across its tools.

What you cannot get free: competitor backlink profiles, search volumes and difficulty for keywords you don't rank for, and large-scale rank tracking. If link building or competitor keyword research is core to your work, keep one suite. Otherwise, the free stack covers most day-to-day SEO for your own site.

The AI half: compare AI visibility tools pricing per answer

Plan names hide very different data volumes. The useful unit is the number of AI answers collected per month: prompts × platforms × runs. Peec AI states this formula on its pricing page: its Starter plan, 50 prompts on 3 models run daily, produces 4,500 answers a month.

Applied to plans with published prices and published limits:

Tool and plan Price per month Cost per 1,000 answers
Searcherries Starter $10 (billed annually) $11
Searcherries Pro $47 (billed annually) $10
Otterly.AI Lite $29 $16
Otterly.AI Standard $189 $16
Ahrefs custom prompts, Basic $50 $20
Ahrefs custom prompts, Scale $250 $10

The calculation assumes daily runs and a 30-day month. Ahrefs counts one prompt on one platform in one location as one check. Otterly's Lite plan covers ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, with AI Mode and Gemini at $9 extra each.

Profound offers a free 7-day trial with 50 prompts; beyond that it sells only custom Enterprise packages.

Cost per answer is a starting point, not the verdict. Check what each plan includes: citation lists, competitor discovery, country and language settings, Search Console and GA4 integrations, and MCP access for working with the data in Claude or ChatGPT.

Three setups by budget

Under $30 a month. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4 and Ahrefs Free for SEO. One entry-level tracker for AI: Searcherries Starter, which also pulls in Search Console, Bing and GA4 data, or Otterly Lite with four platforms. Enough for a single site with 10–15 core prompts.

$50–200 a month. A tracker with 50–100 prompts across three or four platforms, connected through MCP to the assistant your team already uses. This suits a company with several product lines or markets that doesn't run link building in-house.

$200 and up. Keep Ahrefs or Semrush if you need backlink and competitor keyword data, or agency reporting across many domains. Even then, compare the suite's included prompts (5 on Ahrefs Lite, 50 on Semrush Starter) with what a dedicated tracker gives you for the same money. Some teams keep the suite for SEO and add a cheaper tracker for AI.

Before you switch

  1. List the reports you opened in your current suite in the last 90 days. That list, not the feature page, defines what you need to replace.
  2. Run a new tracker in parallel during its trial. Searcherries offers 14 days, Semrush 7 days. Ahrefs has no trial but has a free tier.
  3. Compare annual and monthly billing. Annual discounts in this group range from 15% (Otterly) to 17% (Ahrefs, Semrush) and up to 23% (Searcherries).
  4. Export your history first. Rank and visibility trends usually don't migrate between tools.

Pay for the data you actually use, and make sure the AI visibility part is measured in enough answers to mean something.
